Meena Subramaniam

Artist and traveller with base in India's Western Ghats mountain range
Welcome to Meena Subramaniam’s art website

Welcome to meenart.in, my creative haven where art and imagination converge. My art is a deep dive into the soul of the natural world, an ode to the biodiversity that thrives in India’s wild heart — particularly the Western Ghats, and the north east of India. It’s a journey shaped by years of observation, from my early years in Bengaluru, a good two and half decades residing, exploring sholas and grasslands in the Palni hills to my present time living near Thekkady, painting amidst the forests and hills I call home. Through my paintings, I aim to illuminate the intricate beauty of mountain landscapes — the fleeting elegance of a Malabar banded peacock butterfly, the stoic grace of a partially imagined landscape and the vibrant chaos of flowering orchids and ferns. Each canvas is a portal, inviting viewers to pause and reconnect with the ecosystems that sustain us.

My style straddles the line between realism and fantasy rooted in observation, yet infused with a playful exaggeration of form and colour, besides larger works where I experiment with depth and illusion.

My medium is vibrant, high-quality acrylics to bring nature’s wonders to life. I blend imagination and realism in immersive scenes to evoke awe and wonder for the natural world. Drawing from digital references for precise depictions of birds, butterflies, and exotic plants, my art is grounded in the wild beauty of the natural world.

My treks through remote wildernesses spanning thirty odd years, fuel my passion for butterflies, birds and colourful flowers from the tropics. Beyond my canvas work, I’ve illustrated for books, ArtWanted.com’s 2005 calendar, and tourist resorts showcasing birds, spices, and butterflies. I am also the winner of the TN Khoshoo award, ATREE for “innovative and pioneering work in the field of science communication”, 2019.

I have painted two Sanctuary Asia magazine covers in the recent years. I am featured in “ars Botanica”, Marg magazine, where I explored the intersection of art and botanical science alongside my fascination and inspiration drawn from Marianne North, the great Victorian woman explorer who showcased landscapes around the world.

I have collaborated with ecologist, writer and ecological restoration expert, Suprabha Seshan, of Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary on a few of her essays in various online magazines on nature and ecology.

I have illustrated NCF” Tree guide to Arunachal Pradesh” and also created an educational poster on frugivorous bird dispersal of seed in rainforests, for their educational centre in Pakke, Arunachal Pradesh.

Though I primarily work on private commissions, I also sell paintings directly to clients and occasionally through gallerists.

Explore my portfolio to discover a world where conservation meets creativity, and let my art transport you to realms both real and imagined. These milestones reflect my dual passion: to create beauty and to advocate for the fragile ecosystems I portray. On my website, meenart.in, I share this vision with the world, offering a glimpse into my process, the stories of which speak through the images themselves.

Nature is both my inspiration and my responsibility. Having witnessed its abundance and now its rapid decline, I paint to preserve what remains—not just on canvas, but in the hearts of those who see my work. My art is a call to wonder, to care, and to act, bridging the gap between human imagination and the living world we too often overlook.
